‘Tis the season to be grateful for Sandy the dog – the lucky Labrador was rescued with just minor injuries after snapping her lead and plunging 150 feet down a cliff.

Sandy was rescued in the dark by a climber who rappelled to a narrow ledge where she was trapped after being startled during a Christmas Day hike in Oregon’s Columbia Gorge.

David Schelske, of West Linn, told the Oregon Humane Society that he thought three-year-old Sandy had surely perished after she bounded around a bend and disappeared.

He hiked to the bottom of the cliff, then saw her stranded on a narrow ledge 70 feet above.

An eight-person crew helped humane society volunteer John Thoeni descend, then Mr Thoeni fitted a rescue harness on frightened Sandy before man and dog were hoisted to safety.
