Iraq’s prime minister Haider Abadi has arrived in Ramadi to hail the city’s liberation from Islamic State militants, according to state TV.

Mr Abadi kicked off his tour of the Anbar provincial capital with meetings with security and provincial officials, said Iraqi commander Brigadier General Ahmed Belawi.

Ramadi fell to IS in May, marking a major setback for Iraqi forces and the US-led campaign.

On Monday Iraqi forces, backed by US-led air strikes, drove IS militants out of the city centre and raised the Iraqi flag over the government complex there.

But military officials said insurgents were still holed up in various pockets of the city.
