Iraqi forces have recaptured some areas lost to Islamic State in and around the city of Ramadi, according to security officials.

Troops regained control of the Paediatric and Maternity Hospital and the neighbourhood around it after fierce clashes with IS militants, police spokesman Omar al-Alawni said.

The hospital is close to a complex housing government offices in the city, the capital of Anbar province.

Another police spokesman, Colonel Mahdi Abbas, said government forces had also made progress in their offensive to regain control of Soufiya, one of three villages that fell into the hands of IS last week.

The security situation in Ramadi sharply deteriorated after IS seized Soufiya and two other villages, Sjariyah and Albu-Ghanim.
