A French court has given the green light to evict hundreds of migrants from their shelters at a camp in the northern port city of Calais.

A court official said the Lille Administrative Court ruled on Thursday that French authorities can evict migrants from their tents in the densely populated southern portion of the camp – but cannot entirely raze it.

Common spaces such as schools and places of worship must be kept in place.

State authorities estimate that 800-1,000 live in the southern sector of the camp. Humanitarian groups say there are more than 3,000.
