Prosecutors in South Africa have dropped charges against a man who was arrested over the death of national soccer team captain Senzo Meyiwa.

State prosecution spokesman Nathi Mncube said there is “insufficient evidence” to proceed with a case against Zenokuhle Mbatha, who was arrested two weeks ago and charged with murder and robbery over the star goalkeeper’s shooting death.

Mr Mncube said Mbatha has been released and did not appear in court today in order to protect him and his family.

Meyiwa was shot dead in an apparent house robbery while visiting his girlfriend in Vosloorus township near Johannesburg on October 26. The killing angered South Africans who are used to high levels of violent crime.

Police said they were searching for three suspects. No other arrests have been announced.
