A funeral for a New York City policeman shot to death last week with his partner in their patrol car has begun with thousands of officers from across the country attending in solidarity.

The services for Officer Rafael Ramos began at the Christ Tabernacle Church in Queens.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke at the beginning of the service.

Funeral plans for his partner, Officer Wenjian Liu, have yet to be announced.

The officers were killed on December 20 while sitting in their vehicle on a Brooklyn street. The assailant killed himself.

The brazen daylight shootings shook the city and put an end to large-scale local protests criticising police over a series of high-profile deaths of unarmed black men.

Mr Biden said the killings have “touched the soul of an entire nation”.
