US president Barack Obama is focusing on the need to combat the underlying ideologies that entice people to join violent extremist movements.

Mr Obama is convening a White House summit on the threat of violent extremism, although it is not the event he envisioned.

Planned for last October, the summit never happened before the November elections in the United States.

In the months since, the situation has become worse, with the Islamic State group (IS) spreading and European cities learning first-hand that extremism’s reach is not confined to the Middle East.

During the three-day conference, Mr Obama is highlighting local models for preventing radicalisation.

Community leaders will present “pilot programmes” they have put in place in Los Angeles, Boston and Minneapolis.
