US president Barack Obama is opening a three-day trip to India aimed at turning his personal chemistry with the country’s leader into policy breakthroughs.

Air Force One touched down in New Delhi this morning, and Mr Obama was due to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and lay a wreath at a memorial honouring India’s independence hero Mahatma Gandhi.

The centrepiece of the president’s visit will be his attendance tomorrow as the guest of honour at the annual Republic Day parade.

The festivities mark the day in 1950 when India’s democratic constitution came into force.

However, the White House announced that Obama will skip plans to visit India’s famed Taj Mahal on Tuesday.

Instead, he will travel to Saudi Arabia to pay his respects following the death of King Abdullah.
