A suspected car bomb explosion near a police station in Turkey has killed a policeman and injured 13 other people, according to a government official.

Governor Ali Yerlikaya, of Gaziantep province in southern Turkey, said those injured in the blast at the entrance of the police station include at least nine policemen.

The city is near the border with Syria.

Private NTV television said the explosion appears to have been caused by a car bomb. Unconfirmed reports said gunfire was also heard after the explosion.

Several ambulances have been sent to the scene, the Dogan news agency said.
