Pakistan’s prime minister has vowed to make the country polio-free in the next six months by vaccinating each and every child against the crippling disease.

Nawaz Sharif’s comment came during a high-level meeting on the subject in the capital Islamabad.

According to a government statement, Mr Sharif warned that he would not tolerate negligence during an anti-polio campaign that Pakistan plans to launch this month.

Pakistan is among the world’s only three countries where polio, which can cause paralysis and death, remains endemic.

Since January, Pakistan has detected 235 polio cases, a record figure. Pakistan blames it on militants who regularly target vaccination teams.

The militants accuse polio workers of acting as spies for the US and say the vaccine makes boys sterile.
