Oscar Pistorius did not act with any “deviousness” when he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and he felt vulnerable and anxious, the athlete’s chief defence lawyer has said.

Barry Roux was presenting his final arguments to a judge at the end of the double-amputee’s sentencing hearing at the High Court in Pretoria.

Mr Roux told Judge Thokozile Masipa that Pistorius’s state of mind when he shot Ms Steenkamp through a toilet cubicle door in his home on Valentine’s Day last year should be taken into account in his sentence.

Pistorius said in his evidence that he mistook Ms Steenkamp for a dangerous intruder in his home. He was convicted of culpable homicide.

Pistorius’s lawyers have argued for a sentence involving house arrest and community service.

Prosecutors, who charged that the double-amputee athlete intentionally shot Ms Steenkamp during an argument, want Pistorius sent to prison.
