A second military officer has declared that he is Burkina Faso’s new president after the West African country’s long-time leader was pushed from power.

Colonel Yacouba Zida said early today that he was stepping in immediately to lead the transition back to democracy in a recorded address posted on the website of a national television station.

Opposition protests this week forced President Blaise Compaore to resign yesterday, and General Honore Traore, the joint chief of staff of the armed forces, said he was assuming power.

But confusion reigned late Friday, as Col Zida also began making major announcements about the country’s future. It was not immediately clear if Gen Traore recognised Col Zida’s announcement.
