The son of Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is taking legal action against the ban she has imposed on political rallies, as he campaigns for a Senate seat.

The president has banned gatherings in the capital Monrovia ahead of elections on December 16, citing fears they could help spread Ebola.

But concerns have been raised that the president imposed the ban because large crowds had gathered in support of her son’s opponent.

Information minister Lewis Brown said today that the Supreme Court placed a stay on the ban until it can hear the suit. Robert Sirleaf’s opponent, football legend George Weah, also opposes the ban.

Critics of Mr Sirleaf say his suit is merely a show of distancing himself from his mother, who has been accused of nepotism for giving him plum government posts in the past.
