A probe into a deadly terror attack on a US mission in Libya has issued an order for former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s personal emails relating to the inquiry.

The Republican-controlled House committee has also issued a subpoena to the US state department for all other individuals who may have relevant information over the 2012 incident in Benghazi.

Ms Clinton is the leading contender for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, though she has not declared whether she is running.

The House panel’s announcement comes after it was disclosed that as the nation’s top diplomat, Ms Clinton relied on a personal email account rather than one operated by the government.

Reports have claimed that Ms Clinton’s account was set up on a computer email server traced to her home in Chappaqua, New York.

The attack by Islamic militants on the US compound in Benghazi left four Americans dead, including ambassador J Christopher Stevens.
