A South African prosecutor is arguing in court for an appeal in the case against Oscar Pistorius, who was acquitted of murder over the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel today outlined his objections to the verdict and sentence against the Olympic runner.

Pistorius was convicted of the lesser charge of culpable homicide and sentenced to a five-year prison term in October by Judge Thokozile Masipa.

Mr Nel said the punishment is “shockingly inappropriate”.

Pistorius, who is serving his sentence in a Pretoria prison, was not in court for the session presided over by Judge Masipa.

The double-amputee athlete fatally shot Ms Steenkamp in his home on Valentine’s Day last year.

Pistorius said he thought a dangerous intruder was in the house, but prosecutors alleged he killed his girlfriend after an argument.
