Republicans have seized control of the US Senate for the first time in eight years during the nation’s mid-term elections.

The deciding race was the victory by Republican Thom Tillis over Democratic incumbent Senator Kay Hagan in North Carolina.

Mr Tillis’ win gives the Republicans the six seats they need for a majority in the Senate that takes office in January. The party already has a majority in the lower House of Representatives.

Republicans also picked up seats in Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia.
