Saudi Arabia said it has shot down a missile fired into the kingdom from nearby Yemen, which is engulfed in a civil war.

The Saudi military said it intercepted the missile on Thursday morning in Jizan province and later attacked and destroyed the platform that launched the missile in Yemen.

It made the announcement in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies in the Gulf, backing Yemen’s internationally recognised government, have been battling Shiite rebels in the country known as Houthis.

The Houthis have access to Yemen’s supply of Soviet-era Scud missiles and have fired several across the border during the conflict.

The United Nations said the war in Yemen, the Arab world’s poorest country, has killed nearly 2,800 civilians since March.
