Six Afghan army personnel have been killed after a suicide bomber struck a bus carrying soldiers.

The incident in the south-western suburb of the capital Kabul comes amid a sharp rise in violent incidents just weeks before international combat troops withdraw from the country.

Maj Gen Afzal Aman, chief of operations at the defence ministry, said the attack left 14 others wounded, and that officers were among the dead.

He added that the bus had been taking the officers home when it was struck, most likely by an attacker on foot.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the third major incident of the day.

In the morning, the head of the secretariat for the Afghan Supreme Court, Atiqullah Rawoofi, was gunned down outside his home in Kabul.

Later, the Taliban killed at least 12 workers clearing mines in Afghanistan’s south.
