A small plane has crashed into a house in Maryland.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer could not immediately say whether anyone was in the house in Gaithersburg at the time of the crash, or how many people were injured or killed.

Mr Piringer said the plane appears to seat between six and 10 people, and it crashed into one home, setting it and two other properties on fire.

He said fire crews brought the blaze under control and then began a search and rescue operation to find any survivors in either the homes or the plane.

The crash happened less than one mile from Montgomery County Airpark.

A National Transportation Safety Board spokesman said the agency is sending an investigator to the scene.
