A boat taking tourists on a dolphin-watching trip has capsized off India’s west coast, killing three Russian women.

The women were part of a group of 10 Russian tourists who chartered the motorboat to follow dolphins swimming about half-a-mile off popular Betul beach on the southern coast of Goa state.

Local police official Nilesh Shirotkar said a large wave toppled the boat and trapped some of its passengers underneath.

Mr Shirotkar said officials from the Russian Consulate in Goa are travelling to the site.

Goa is a popular beach destination and attracts about three million tourists each year. Most of the roughly half-million foreign tourists come from Russia.
