Turkish jets have shot down a warplane that violated national airspace at the border with Syria, reports in the country say.

The Dogan news agency, quoting unnamed military officials, said the plane was shot down and crashed into Syrian territory close to the border with Turkey.

It is believed the plane’s pilots ejected by parachute.

The agency did not say which nation the plane was from, and a Turkish government official could not confirm the report.

Last month, Turkish jets shot down an unidentified drone that had also violated Turkey’s airspace.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the warplane crashed in the Turkomen Mountains region in the coastal province of Latakia.

He said it is not yet clear if the plane was Russian or Syrian.
