Three Egyptians, including two with British citizenship, have been detained after a man told police he overheard them discussing ways to destabilise the country.

An Egyptian official said that a brother and sister, and their cousin, were arrested at a Cairo metro station the night before after a passenger told police they were speaking in English about burning homes and businesses on the anniversary of the January 2011 uprising which led to the ousting of long-time president Hosni Mubarak.

The three denied the accusations and the case has been referred to prosecutors, the official said.

The British embassy in Cairo has been closed since last week because of security fears.
