A military general who recently returned to Uganda from exile in the UK has been put under house arrest by soldiers, according to an opposition group.

The group, Free Uganda, said the arrest of the four-star General David Sejusa was “a cowardly act” by President Yoweri Museveni’s regime.

Gen Sejusa returned from exile in London in December in what seemed to be a negotiated settlement with Mr Museveni, Uganda’s long-serving president.

Gen Sejusa yesterday told journalists that he had turned down Mr Museveni’s invitation to meet for reconciliation.

The general heads a political party opposed to what he says is the president’s increasingly authoritarian rule.

Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Paddy Ankunda said the military action is intended to give Gen Sejusa protection. Journalists were barred by heavily armed military police from getting close to the scene.
