The UN secretary-general has called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict in Syria to give civilians relief and to allow a step towards a political solution of the crisis.

In his statement, Ban Ki-moon noted the Syrian government’s apparent willingness to stop all air strikes and artillery shelling throughout the city of Aleppo for six weeks to allow the UN to deliver humanitarian aid.

The UN envoy to Syria announced the development this week, though it is not known when the freeze would start or whether opposition forces will agree to the plan.

Mr Ban’s statement urges opposition forces to suspend their shelling of the city.

Envoy Staffan de Mistura will travel to Damascus to discuss the plan this month.
