The UN Security Council has been asked to vote on imposing tough new sanctions on North Korea in response to Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test and rocket launch.

The US Mission to the UN requested the vote be taken on Tuesday.

A vote on the resolution, drafted by the US and China, has been held up for several days by Russia which asked for more time to study the lengthy text and reportedly suggested some changes.

The draft resolution would require every UN member to inspect all cargo heading to and from North Korea for illicit goods.

Angola takes over the rotating Security Council presidency on Tuesday. The US asked for the vote to be held after the council meets to discuss its programme for March.
