The US ambassador to South Korea has been taken to hospital after being attacked while giving a lecture.

The Yonhap news agency said Mark Lippert had been injured in Seoul, although there were no details on the nature of his wounds.

TV stations showed a picture of Mr Lippert bleeding from the head and wrist, but said his injuries were not life-threatening.

YTN said a man only identified by his surname, Kim, was arrested after the attack.

Mr Lippert, 42, became ambassador last year and has been mostly popular during his time in Seoul.

His wife gave birth here and the couple gave their son a Korean middle name. Mr Lippert was formerly the US assistant secretary (defence) for Asian affairs.
