A 67-year-old Japanese woman suspected of poisoning her husband is being investigated over the deaths of a number of other former spouses or partners.

Chisako Kakehi has denied being involved in the men’s deaths.

Kyoto police arrested Kakehi after cyanide was found in the body of her 75-year-old husband, according to reports. They were married just one month before he died in December 2013.

Kyodo news service said Kakehi had married four times and several partners had died within a few years of marrying or starting relationships with her.

Cyanide has also been found in the blood of a 71-year-old partner who fell while riding a mini-bike in 2012, Kyodo said. His death was initially attributed to heart disease.

Media reports suggested Kakehi could have killed the men for insurance or inheritance money.

The deaths occurred in the western Japan area around the cities of Kyoto and Osaka.
