Two workmen are stranded 69 storeys above street level after a maintenance cradle on the tallest skyscraper in the US partially collapsed.

Firefighters were called to the south side of the newly-opened 1 World Trade Centre in New York City early this afternoon.

Joe Pentangelo, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the building, said it appeared that a cable on the cradle had broken.

Police official John Miller said the cradle is hanging at “a 75-degree angle”.

The Fire Department said the workers are tethered and communicating with rescuers.

It was not immediately clear what rescue measures were planned.

WABC-TV reported that people on the ground were moved back in case glass began flying.
